In aviation and spacecraft engines, coatings are generally applied to components to prevent deformations caused by high temperature, low temperature, wear, and oxidation-sulfidation conditions. The first of these are Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs), which are used to reduce surface temperatures and thermal stresses in high-temperature zone components such as combustion chambers, turbines, and exhaust sections. TBC coatings are typically made of ceramic or zirconium. Similarly, TBC coatings can also be used to minimize the deformation effects of sudden temperature drops on components. Abrasive coatings are applied to moving parts in particular to provide resistance against wear and to preserve the lifespan and performance of engine components. For these coatings, titanium nitride, chromium nitride, chromium carbide, and tungsten carbide are generally used depending on the component’s operating conditions. Oxidation and sulfidation are commonly observed in areas exposed to high or low temperatures where chemical reactions occur. For these areas, aluminum, chromium, or platinum-based coatings or special paints are preferred.

The role of coatings is critical in aviation and space engines with lifespan requirements. Deformations that may occur in these components due to excessive stress can not only reduce performance but also cause serious engine damage. Therefore, coated components are subjected to tests involving sudden temperature increases and decreases before being integrated into the engine.

E2T provides turnkey test systems that simulate real operating conditions of coated components in laboratory environments. With thermal shock test systems, you can safely conduct your development and validation processes by applying the stresses your components will experience throughout their operational life in a laboratory setting.
